LBMT has focused much of its work in recent years on one of the poorest and most neglected areas of the country, Cyangugu. Along with other charities, LBMT works with the Anglican Diocese to help the people here to rebuild their lives and future. Our projects aim to encourage community co-operation and be self-sustaining in the future.
The Trust has also supported projects in other areas of Rwanda including Butare (where LBMT first started work) and in Buye in Burundi where Lawrence Barham spent many years. In Kabale, Uganda where Lawrence Barham spent his first ten years and built what has become the first independent university in Uganda to be accredited for awarding degrees, LBMT has helped to build the Principal’s house, a multi-purpose block, a women’s hostel and computer centre. In Kisoro, also in Uganda, LBMT has built two dispensaries, a church for pygmies, a vocational school and a small guest house. |
LBMT Projects include: more > Direct Support: to help those who are especially disadvantaged, including AIDS patients, widows and orphans. Providing medication and building new houses has a huge impact on the lives of individuals.
Education: LBMT continues to support the construction of schools in the Diocese. Four primary schools have been built in Cyangugu and three in more remote villages at Gashirabwoba, Bweyeye and Rasono. A secondary school was also built in Kamembe to train young girls, many of them orphans from the genocide, in accountancy and secretarial skills. In 2009, LBMT raised over £160,000, including £58,998 which was donated by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission, to build a new Middle School for St Matthew’s Primary School. See Project News. Child Sponsorship: Many children in Rwanda are unable to attend schools as their families have little or no income to pay the fees. The LBMT Sponsorship Programme was established to enable the most disadvantaged to attend St Matthew’s School. If you would like to support this programme please click here.
LBMT Projects include: Spiritual: Central to the work of the Trust is the support of the church in its work of proclaiming the Gospel of the Lord Jesus and bringing eternal hope to the people. Providing the costly corrugated roof sheets has helped many rural churches and pastors’ houses have been provided or repaired. The Trust has also supported the Kigali Anglican Theological College.
Self-Income Generation: The Peace Guest House in Kamembe enjoys stunning views over Lake Kivu. It was constructed to provide sustainable local employment, encourage tourists to the area, provide accommodation for business, government and NGO visitors and to generate sustained income for the Diocese and its work. See www.peaceguesthouse.org for more information. Medical: LBMT were involved in the construction of a dispensary in Kamembe and this is now being run by Rwanda Aid on behalf of the Diocese. |
